Reining for Freedom!
A veteran and first responders-focused equine therapy venture, bringing horses and health to our beloved heroes and their families! Every donation will go towards our equine program and helping service members!
Owner and Founder Robyn, comes from a military family background. Her father served our country in both the Army and Marines and was one of the first paratroopers. Her daughter served in the Army and her son has served Marines, Air Force and is serving Alaska Air National Guard. She has had several family and close friends serving or have served and some have died in the line of duty in the military and first responders. This program is close to Robyn’s heart and her passion is to help those that hurt from trauma and PTSD.
The United States is facing a full blown epidemic of Post Traumatic Stress that will affect every
community in many countries for decades to come. These are our national heroes we are
talking about, and their lives are worth saving, whether from suicide, homelessness or from
hopelessness. Horses beyond number exist all around the USA and other countries with no job
or purpose to them. It is so critical that veteran horse programs are started all over the world so
that veterans everywhere can have access to this unique and powerful healing! Contact us to
discover how horses are so effective with veterans.
Equine Therapy emerges as a beacon of hope and healing for our honored veterans. Amidst the rhythmic hoofbeats and gentle nuzzles of our noble steeds, these brave souls find solace and strength. With each session, they forge a profound connection, transcending words to communicate with their equine partners. Together, they embark on a journey of restoration, navigating through the echoes of their past traumas towards a brighter horizon. Your support is pivotal in sustaining this transformative endeavor. Rest assured, every ounce of your generosity fuels our Equine Therapy program, ensuring that our veterans continue to receive the life-changing care they deserve. Join us in honoring their service and sacrifice as we pave the path towards healing, one hoofprint at a time.
At Angel Trail Ranch, our mission is to provide exceptional equestrian services to our clients while promoting the well-being and enjoyment of horses.
How does equine therapy work?
SELF-MANAGMENT OF ANXIETY LEVELS: Horses actually have the same mental behaviors
that a veteran with PTSD has, and this helps attract the veteran to the horse. Horses are hyper
alert to their surrounding and hyper reactive to potential threats. They like to be in a herd where
all are watching for threat dangers. Not only do they watch their surroundings, but they are
extremely good at “reading” anxiety in the humans around them as another indicator of threats
in the area. They can detect fear, anxiety and anger in humans that no other human or animal
can.
REGAIN STRENGTH: Caring for horses has plenty of mental benefits, but also a good portion of the work is physical. After all, horses are large creatures, and making sure that they’re healthy and well-looked-after is a lot of work. For that reason, veterans report the following benefit after participating in equine therapy treatments:
RESTORES SELF CONFIDENCE: Another gift that the horse gives these veterans is an
ability to be assertive without being afraid or angry. Horses are very focused upon who is
the leader. While in their herd, they spend ALL their time working on this. They want to know
which horse is going to instantly make the decision on how to react to a threat just as soon as it
is detected and have the rest of the herd follow this leadership. So they are continually testing
all the other horses by trying to push each other around. This is very important to them,
because time lost in the initial moments of facing a threat can mean life or death. They take this
behavior into their relationship with every human that they work with. They will test the authority of the human by gently trying to push them around. A big portion of class time is spent
teaching the veteran how they should move the horse around on the ground and establish the veteran’s leadership over the horse. This is commonly called Natural Horsemanship Training and Groundwork, and is a big part of most successful Veteran Horse Therapy programs. It provides the veteran with another boost in self-confidence after they can successfully move the horse around while on the ground.
FIRST LEVEL CLASSES - INTRODUCTION TO HORSEMANSHIP
All students start in this Introduction to Horsemanship class. Classes occur weekly for 8 weeks and there is no riding in this class. Students learn natural horsemanship "groundwork" so that they can be accepted by the horse as the horse's "Alpha Leader". They learn horse behavior so they can "read" how their horse is feeling. They learn grooming skills, how to move their horse in different directions, how to train their horse not to be anxious about various things, and how to round pen their horse.
SECOND LEVEL CLASSES - INTRODUCTION TO RIDING
After completing "Introduction to Horsemanship", students start this Second Level program, "Introduction to Riding", which also occurs weekly for 8 weeks. Students learn how to put their saddle pad, saddle, and bridle on their horse. They learn mounting and balance as well as various methods to "cue" or direct their horse. They also learn emergency techniques.
THIRD LEVEL CLASSES - INTRODUCTION TO MOUNTAIN OBSTACLES
Students can expand their horsemanship skills after completing their second level classes "Introduction to Riding". In this advanced riding level, students get to practice moving their horse through obstacles, first on the ground with the horse on a lead rope, and then riding. A strong level of trust is developed between the rider and the horse that "both" will do their part to navigate the obstacle. There is no end to the learning of advanced horsemanship skills for the student that comes to Hope for Heroes Horsemanship.
By sponsoring a horse from our herd you will be directly contributing to the support of that horse's annual maintenance and welfare. This includes, farrier, vet, feed, supplement and stall management costs. We take excellent care of our horses so that they can take care of our heroes! Check out our horses below:
